POEM FOR A BEATEN WIFE

Wind Lake, Wis.

Nineteen hours after calling             911
to say she was in the back
of her ex-husband’s truck with her hands

tied, she was discovered
by an employee of a storage facility
                          who heard             whimpering

as he passed a private locker
             on the second floor
                          and broke

down the door             to find her
one hundred seventeen miles from home,
                          severely beaten, bound

and gagged             with duct tape,
             and stuffed in a plastic
                          garbage can.

                                                                 (I think she’s very lucky
                                                                 said the Police Chief)
