Poems: Residencies are available for the months of February, June, and October from the 1st through the end of the month inclusive. Writers will share accommodations in bay-view cottages in the serenely beautiful village of Oysterville and will receive a weekly stipend for food. Our goal is to provide writers with an environment in which they can pursue their work without interruption. A suitable applicant is a writer who has demonstrated talent and commitment to his or her career. Both emerging and established poets, fiction writers, creative non-fiction writers, playwrights, and screen writers are eligible for the residencies. People of some self-sufficiency are our ideal. Applicants may not be current board members, advisory board members, staff or consultants for the Espy Foundation, or their immediate family members. Residents are expected to provide their own transportation to and from Oysterville, which is 180 miles from Seattle and 120 miles from Portland, and they are encouraged to keep a car with them for the duration of the residency. Deadline for application: November 1 for the FEBRUARY Residency, March 1 for the JUNE Residency, July 1 for the OCTOBER Residency. Applications must include the enclosed application form and all required materials specified in the form. Applications and Sponsors' Letters must be postmarked on or before the deadlines. (Sponsors' Letters are acceptable by fax to (360) 665-5224 if received by the deadline. A non-refundable fee of $20, made payable to The Willard R. Espy Literary Foundation, must be included with your application form, project description, and work samples. The two sponsors’ letters should be sent directly to the Foundation at the above address by the sponsor writing the letter. You will be notified by mail of the panel’s decision approx. three to four weeks after the deadline. |

Poems: Short poems only (under 100 words). This competition is FREE! Open to anyone, anywhere. We pick the poems that move to the judging round and post them on our "Fina-List" board. That's right, you're auditioning every time you enter. Enter as often as you like, but once you've made the "Fina-List" you can only appear once … one poem in the finals per poet is the rule. Of course you retain all the rights to your work. The rules are few and simple, but will be adhered to: No foul language—good poetry doesn't need it. Keep it under 200 words; we don't want a novel. More thatn 200 words will be deleted. Enter no more than 2 poems per day, or you will be deleted from the board. FINA-LISTS ONLY—must submit, with each entry, your full name, your e-mail address, and name of poem only to: Poetry Webmaster. We do not accept anonymous entries. Your submission means you acknowledge the work submitted is your own, and, you understand that you have given us the right to publish your poem on our web site. SPELLING/GRAMMATICAL ERRORS, except when clearly taken in artistic license, will result in immediate disqualification. We expect all entrants to at least use "Spell Check" if not the dictionary. (US/Canadian/British English). Published poets, previous entrants, honourable mentions and winners are free to re-enter this competition. You may re-enter poems from the previous competition. All decisions are final by the judges. |

| Chapbook manuscript: Include only one poem per page. If a poem continues to a second page, indicate whether or not there is a stanza break. Thirty-five lines equals one page. Divider pages or section titles should be included in the total page count. When determining total line length for each poem, include spaces between stanzas (example: a poem of 5 couplets would equal 14 lines). Numbers or section breaks (often indicated by a * symbol) should also be included as lines when calculating total line length. Count an epigraph as three extra lines. A line that has more than 60 characters (including spaces and punctuation) should be counted as two lines of your total line count. If lines are staggered like a Ferlinghetti poem, estimate the width of the line and remember that the final chapbook will be printed in 10 point Times New Roman font on pages that are 5 1/2 inches wide. Include the following as separate pages: a biography (this can be included in the cover letter), a cover page with contact information, table of contents, dedication, acknowledgments for any previous publications, and an inside title page (with no name). These pages should not be included in the manuscript's total page count. The cover page should include the manuscript title and all contact information (mailing address, email address, home phone, and cell phone if available). Name should not appear anywhere on the manuscript.Submit manuscript in a 9 X 12 (or 10 X 13) inch non-padded envelope or USPS priority mail envelope.
